1. I want to visit this Sunday. Are you accepting visitors?
We have a day of mindfulness on most Sundays open to the public. To learn more about the schedule for that day, and which dates are days of mindfulness, please visit our Schedule of Events web page.
2. I would like to be a monk or a member of your monastery. How do I go about doing this?
When you are ready, please go to our website and register for 14 days by going to our Register for a Retreat page, then click on Personal Retreat. Please enter a note in the Comments section that you are interested in becoming a monastic. During this time you may write a letter requesting approval that your stay be extended. You may ask to take part in the Work Exchange program after the 2 weeks and receive up to 50% off the cost of your stay. You will have time to talk with the monastics and to learn more about the process of becoming a monk or nun. For more information, please visit our web page, Become a Monastic.
3. I would like to visit for a month or more. I was wondering if I can do that.
When you are ready, please go to our website and register for 14 days. To register, please click on Register for a Retreat, then click on Personal Retreat. Please enter in the Comments section that you are interested in staying for a month (or whatever the time frame is). During this time you may write a letter requesting approval that your stay be extended. You may ask to take part in the Work Exchange program after the 2 weeks and receive up to 50% off the cost of your stay up to 3 months.
4. I am inquiring as to the cost of a retreat at your monastery.
The cost of a retreat can be found on our Register for a Retreat page. Costs are per person per night on a sliding scale. You decide what is affordable and what the value is for you. Scholarships are available for Themed Retreats only. Themed Retreats are listed in the Schedule of Events. To apply for a scholarship for a Themed Retreat, please click on the registration link found in the Schedule of Events. Begin the registration process. Click on the box for Scholarship and follow the directions from there.
5. Is it possible to schedule a weekend visit from Friday afternoon through Sunday afternoon?
We welcome guests to come to Blue Cliff and share the practices with us on Personal Retreat. Arrival days are on Fridays. We suggest being here between 3 and 5 pm, in time for dinner, 6:00 pm and orientation, 7:30 pm. Please visit our Register for a Retreat page and the Personal Retreat link. The bold, underlined Fridays in the three calendars are the available arrival days. You may stay through the bold, underlined dates up to two weeks. The greyed out areas are Unavailable for registration. Many guests enjoy coming for the weekend and departing after our 1:00 pm lunch on Sunday.
6. Will there be children's activities at the day of mindfulness?
Children are invited out for special activities beginning with the 10:00 am dharma talk on the first Sunday of each month. Please bring your children to the Big Meditation Hall at that time.
7. Will Thich Nhat Hanh be there?
Our teacher, Thich Nhat Hanh, suffered a stroke in the fall of 2014. His health continues to improve over time. Updates on his health at Plum Village in France are posted on the Plum Village website and www.facebook.com/thichnhathanh. There are no plans for him to travel at this time.
8. Will there be lunch at the Day of Mindfulness?
We provide a vegan lunch at each day of mindfulness.
9. I am interested in staying for the winter retreat 2016-2017. Is that possible at this time?
When you are ready to register for the Winter Retreat, please visit our website page, Register for a Retreat. Scroll down to Personal Retreat. Click on the beige letters and you should be able to follow the registration from there. Please plan for a Friday arrival day. You may register for up to two weeks. If you wish to stay longer, you may write a letter during the two weeks requesting this to the community. You can also ask to be on work exchange and receive up to 50% off the cost of your stay after the first two weeks.
The Winter Retreat begins Saturday, November 26, 2017. Opening ceremonies will take place on the 26th and 27th. The retreat ends February 26th.
